Install a Nessus Scanner on a Linux Device

The steps in this procedure require administrative or root privileges on the device.

Before you begin:

To install a Nessus scanner on a Linux device:

  1. Install the Nessus installation package downloaded from the Downloads Page. The specific filename varies depending on your platform and version. The following table contains some examples:




    # rpm -ivh Nessus-<version number>-es6.x86_64.rpm

    Debian 6

    # dpkg -i Nessus-<version number>-debian6_amd64.deb

    FreeBSD 10

    # pkg add Nessus-<version number>-fbsd10-amd64.txz

  2. Start the Nessus daemon using the following command depending on your platform:



    RHEL, CentOS, Oracle Linux, Fedora, SUSE, FreeBSD

    # service nessusd start

    Debian, Kali, Ubuntu

    # /etc/init.d/nessusd start

What to do next:

  • Complete the initial configuration for Nessus and configure it as a managed scanner linked to, as described in Configure Nessus in the Nessus User Guide .
