Addressing License Overage

Grace Period

When your Tenable Identity Exposure installation exceeds 110% of your maximum licensed users for on-premises environments, the system enters a "grace period" which:

  • Lasts for 45 days

  • Allows continued full access to the platform during this time

  • Displays a warning banner at the top of your dashboard

  • Will restrict platform access if not resolved before the grace period ends

Warnings

  • During the grace period: A warning banner appears at the top of your dashboard, as follows.

  • After the grace period expires: If you do not take action during the 45-day grace period, a different banner appears and Tenable limits your access to the platform.

Resolution

You have two ways to address this license overage: upgrade your license or reduce the active user count.

Upgrade your license

  • If your organization has grown and needs the current number of users

  • If you anticipate further growth in the near future

  • If you want to avoid managing user count on an ongoing basis

To upgrade your license:

  1. Contact your Tenable sales representative or account manager.

  2. Request a license upgrade to accommodate your current user count.

  3. Provide your current user count (visible in the platform under License information)

  4. Once you receive the new license file, apply it in the system:

    • Navigate to Configuration License.

    • Upload the new license file.

    • Save the changes.

  1. Verify that the warning banner no longer appears.

Reduce the active user count

  • If there are inactive users you cannot remove.

  • If your current license is sufficient for your actual needs.

  • If you want to optimize costs by staying within your existing license.

To reduce the user count:

  1. Review your current active users list.

  2. Identify users who no longer need access:

    • Former employees

    • Duplicate accounts

    • Test accounts

    • Inactive accounts (not logged in for 90+ days)

  1. Deactivate or remove these accounts:

  • Select the users to remove.

  • Use the bulk action options or individual user settings.

  • Confirm the deactivation or removal.

  1. Continue this process until your active user count is below 110% of your maximum licensed users.

  2. Verify that the warning banner no longer appears.
