Auto-Discovery of Hosts and Virtual Machines
Auto-Discovery allows a single scan to find the hypervisor hosts and virtual machines that Prism Central manages and add them to the scan targets, so you do not have to maintain those targets by hand. When you enable Discover Hosts or Discover Virtual Machines in the credential, Tenable uses the Prism Central API to enumerate the hosts or virtual machines (VM) that Prism Central manages and adds each one to the list of scan targets. Tenable only authenticates to Prism Central during host and VM discovery.
Why Use Auto-Discovery Instead of Manual Target Entry?
-
Scale and convenience: For environments with large numbers of hypervisor hosts and virtual machines, Auto-Discovery reduces time spent on scan creation and preparation. Target lists remain current without manual updates.
Configuration Options
| Option | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Discover Hosts | Adds all discovered Nutanix hypervisor hosts to the scan targets you include in your scan. | Enabled |
| Discover Virtual Machines | Adds all discovered Nutanix virtual machines to the scan targets you include in your scan. | Enabled |
Caution: When you use auto-discovery, Tenable recommends that you use a scanner group with one scanner and enter only a single initial host in the scan. If multiple scanners run an auto-discovery scan, Tenable may scan the targets it retrieves from the integration more than once.
Note: Auto-Discovery does not automatically add the ability to authenticate remotely to discover Nutanix hypervisor hosts and virtual machines. You can add additional SSH credentials to authenticate to the hypervisor hosts discovered and added to the scan, as well as SSH or Windows credentials to authenticate to virtual machines discovered and added to the scan.
