Install Tenable Nessus Network Monitor

Before You Begin

  • Download the Tenable Nessus Network Monitor package.
  • Ensure you can run the following commands with administrative or root privileges.

To ensure audit record time stamp consistency between Tenable Nessus Network Monitor and Tenable Security Center, ensure the underlying OS makes use of NTP as described in the Red Hat documentation.

Tip: Ensure that organizational and OS firewall rules permit access to port 8835 on the Tenable Nessus Network Monitor server.

To install Tenable Nessus Network Monitor on Linux:

  1. Install the Tenable Nessus Network Monitor .rpm file downloaded from the Tenable Downloads page in RedHat or CentOS with the following command. The specific filename varies depending on your platform and version.

    # dnf install Tenable Nessus Network Monitor-5.x.x-esx.x86_64.rpm

    Preparing...      ########################################### [100%]

    1:NNM             ########################################### [100%]

    [*] Tenable Nessus Network Monitor installation completed.

    #

    The installation creates the /opt/nnm directory, which contains the Tenable Nessus Network Monitor software, default plugins, and directory structure.

  2. (Optional) You can verify the rpm's signature before deploying. See Verify the RPM Signature.

  3. Start Tenable Nessus Network Monitor for Red Hat and CentOS systems using the following command:

    # service nnm start

  4. Navigate to https://<IP address or hostname>:8835, which displays the Tenable Nessus Network Monitor web front end to log in for the first time.

    Refer to Configure Tenable Nessus Network Monitor to complete the initial login.

You must ensure the latest version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package is installed for your 64-bit platform and architecture. Be sure to stop any other programs on your system that utilize WinPcap.

To install Tenable Nessus Network Monitor on Windows:

  1. Double-click the .exe file downloaded from the Tenable Downloads page. The specific filename varies depending on your version.

    The InstallShield Wizard launches, which walks you through the installation process and required configuration steps.

  2. Click the Next button.

    The License Agreement screen appears.

  3. Agree to the terms to continue the installation process and use Tenable Nessus Network Monitor.

    Tip: You can copy the text of the agreement into a separate document for reference, or you can click the Print button to print the agreement directly from this screen.

  4. Click the Next button.

    The Customer Information screen appears. The User Name and Company Name boxes are used to customize the installation, but are not related to any configuration options (e.g., for interfacing with Tenable Security Center).

  5. Click the Next button.

    The Choose Program Location screen appears, where you can verify the location in which the Tenable Nessus Network Monitor binaries are installed.

  6. Click the Change button to specify a custom path.

  7. Click the Next button.

    The Choose Data Location screen appears, where you can verify the location in which user data generated by Tenable Nessus Network Monitor is stored.

  8. Click the Change button to specify a custom path.

    Tip: If you connect Tenable Nessus Network Monitor to Tenable Security Center, altering the data path disables Tenable Security Center from retrieving reports.

  9. Click the Next button.

    The Ready to Install the Program screen appears, where you can review and edit the information supplied on previous screens.

  10. Click the Install button.

    The Setup Status screen appears. If the most recent version of WinPcap is already installed on the system, the Tenable Nessus Network Monitor installation process asks if you want to force or cancel installation of WinPcap. If it does not detect WinPcap, or detects and older version, a second installer launches to install or upgrade the software.

    Tip:Use the provided version of WinPcap or newer. Tenable Nessus Network Monitor has been designed and tested using the supplied version of WinPcap.

  11. Start Tenable Nessus Network Monitor.

  1. Double-click the .dmg file downloaded from the Tenable Downloads page to mount the disk image Tenable Nessus Network Monitor Install. The specific filename varies depending on your version.

  2. Double-click the Install Tenable Nessus Network Monitor.pkg file.

    The Install Tenable Tenable Nessus Network Monitor window appears, which walks you through the installation process and any required configuration steps.

  3. Click the Continue button.

    The Software License Agreement screen appears.

  4. Agree to the terms to continue the installation process and use Tenable Nessus Network Monitor.

    Tip: You can copy the text of the agreement into a separate document for reference, or you can click the Print button to print the agreement directly from this screen.

  5. Click Install to begin the installation.

    A window appears asking for authentication permission to install the software.

  6. Click the Install Software button.

    A window appears, requesting permission to allow Tenable Nessus Network Monitor to accept incoming network connections. If this option is denied, Tenable Nessus Network Monitor is installed but functionality is severely reduced.

  7. When the identity dialog box appears, click Continue.

    Tip: Once the installation process is complete, eject the Tenable Nessus Network Monitor install volume.
